The Strawberyy Vacuum

The other day several children and I were having a conversation, and we started talking about strawberries. One boy said, "My dad takes strawberries and vacuums them.............." He paused with a look of deep concentration on his face. Then he continued, "My dad takes strawberries and vacuums them in that swirly thingy, then he calls it a smoothie. It tastes like strawberry jam."

Upside Up

At our child care center, the children who are there all day take naps. We usually have them rest on their mat with their head near the wall. Today one of the two year olds turned herself around on her mat so that her feet were by the wall, and her head was at the other end. She looked at the child next to her and said, "He is upside up, and I am upside down!"

Snoring

At church on Sunday, the children's lesson was about making right choices. The teacher would read an example, then ask the children what they should do. She read the following example to the children.

You get in bed, then remember you haven't said your prayers yet. You know you should get up, kneel down, and say your prayers, but you are really tired and just want to stay in bed and go to sleep. What should you do?

Jack, one of the 4 year olds, yells out, "SNORE!"

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

At lunch, the children began noticing words on their food. They would ask "What does this say?" as they pointed to their juice box, or fruit snacks, or whatever it might be.

Then they started asking each other spelling questions. "Do you know how to spell Eric?" How do you spell no?" How do you spell yes?", and so on. One of the boys was answering all the questions very quickly, before anyone else had a chance to respond.

The girl sitting across from him said, "Okay, how do you spell supercalafragalisticexpialidocious?" He looked at her, his jaw dropped, and he said, "I don't even know how to SAY it!"

Little Olds

One of our three year old preschool children spent most of his day in with the two year old class yesterday. He started his day a bit upset, and the two's teacher took him in with her to give him lots of TLC.

Later, when he rejoined his own class, he and I talked about being in with the two year olds. I asked him things like, "What was happening in the two year old class?", "Did you have fun with the two year olds?" etc.

A bit later he said to me, "Can I go back with the little olds?"

Very bad words

Today a couple of the preschool children came up to me with very serious faces.

Joey said, "Miss Janet, Rosie called us a bad word."

Eric piped up with, "She called us a very bad word."

"She called us a very, very, very, very bad word."

Joey nodded his agreement, and said, "I can't even say it."

Eric said, "Miss Janet, she called us a loser!"

Stories

I shared my poem, CABBAGE HEARTS AND TOAST with the children in my class yesterday. Of course I told it expressively, and they were all watching me intently (A rare ocassion, I know!) When I finished, one of the children said, "Hey, that's like a story!"
